# Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Overview by Visible

## What is Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)?

BYOD is a program where you, as a new member, brings your own device(s) when you switch to Visible. This program offers deals and a seamless way to get started with Visible.

## Before you BYOD

Before you BYOD to Visible, please keep in mind:

- Always [check your IMEI](/content/help/find-your-imei/index.html) in the [compatibility checker](/content/shop/compatibility/index.html) to be 100% sure your phone is BYOD compatible.

- Whether iPhone or Android, your phone needs to be [unlocked](/content/help/how-to-unlock-a-phone/index.html) before you can enjoy the Visible life.  
  - If you're paying for your phone in monthly installments, it is probably locked and will need to be unlocked by your carrier to be compatible.  
  - **Why some devices are not compatible:** Phone manufacturers enable certain settings and software for the phone to work with Visible. Each device is unique and compatibility is dependent on a lot of factors including things like hardware and software.
- Any device you purchase from our [shop](/content/shop/smartphones/index.html) is compatible with our Network.  
  - You can even [trade-in](/content/deals/trade-in/index.html) the device you have towards the purchase of a new device.

- You are not required to purchase a device from our shop.

- You can choose to port-in your phone number whether you bring your own phone or buy a phone from us.  
  - Note: Users can bring their phone number before and after activation.

## Ready to BYOD?

- Make sure your phone is compatible by using our [Compatibility Checker.](/content/shop/compatibility/index.html)

- If your device is compatible, then you are ready to choose a plan and place an order  
  - If you ordered a pSIM, wait until you receive your SIM, then activate.
  
  - If you decided to activate with eSIM, download the eSIM, then active your Visible service.
- Download the Visible App and start your activation.

**Note:** If your current device is not compatible with Visible services, then head on over to [our store and purchase a device/phone](/content/shop/smartphones/index.html) that fits your needs and see if another one of [Visible's deals](/content/deals/index.html) (not BYOD) can be applied to your account.
